If you are visiting your children at Uppingham School and have time for a meal outside of town then you might want to consider The Horse and Jockey, an award-winning privately owned freehouse situated in the very pretty village of Manton on the southern shore of Rutland Water, equidistant between the market towns of Oakham and Uppingham. The pub is about a ten minute drive from Uppingham School.
The recently refurbished seventeenth century pub offers all the charm of a traditional country inn with an open fire, stone floors and low beams. There is also a pretty patio garden..
Day visitors to Rutland water can engage in sailing, trout fishing and bird watching and if you fancy some exercise before a hearty lunch then there’s a 25-mile circular track for walking and cycling with cycle hire available locally. Helpfully the pub is situated at the half way mark.
The menu features typical pub favourites such as steaks, homemade steak and ale pie, grilled chicken, pork sausages and mash and beer-battered haddock and chips or if you just fancy a pint of ale and a sandwich they serve baguettes with a choice of fillings such as warm beef with horseradish, prawn marie rose and mature cheddar.
There is a good choice of cask-conditioned ales on offer with regularly-changing guest beers. Recently the pub was serving Fall at the First (ABV 5%) and Greene King IPA (ABV 3.6%)
